Iginio De Luca “Another round another race”

OPERA VIVA BARRIERA DI MILANO 2020
Iginio De Luca
Another round another race (2020)
9 June – 12 July 2020
Roundabout of Piazza Bottesini, Turin
The second billboard of the fifth edition of Opera Viva Barriera di Milano, a project devised by Alessandro Bulgini, curated by Christian Caliandro and supported by Flashback, the art fair whose claim is “all art is contemporary” (Turin, Pala Alpitour 5 / 8 November 2020), shall be inaugurated live on Facebook – @flashbackfair – on Tuesday 9 June at hrs. 19.
The billboard will be visible in the roundabout of Piazza Bottesini for everybody since the 9 June in the morning.
The theme Flashback selected this year – for its eight appointment – is Ludens, inspired to the fanciful humorous tale “Unicorn Variations” by Roger Zelazny and to the works of Johan Huizinga. Thus, playing as a foundation of human life and creativity, as an essential approach for the continuous reconstruction of the world and a basis for art and culture; the game as a sacred activity.
In these months of emergency, lockdown and forced pause – also in the sequence of these images, which traditionally mark the approaching steps to the fair – many things have changed around and within us: the life conditions, the awareness of what is happening, the fears and hopes that concern both the present and the future.
Then, Opera Viva Barriera di Milano is restarting from this image, which Iginio De Luca developed for the project: a small camper which has been abandoned for years, an old Mercedes model parked in Rome, close to the Baths of Caracalla. The camper is an explosion and an accumulation of objects, colors, kitsch and vernacular languages, amongst flags, pennants, exotic fans, scale models and toys. Patriotic, religious and sport souvenirs. They are, as the artist himself states, “emblems of an indiscriminate nostalgic accumulation, which clumsily decorate a vehicle allocated to travel, but which has not been traveling for a long time. An aware or unconscious forced pause, which entrusts the mapping of a national affective touristic geography to the dynamic memory, which collects and withholds the sounds and images of its displacements”.
This work turns out – if possible – to be even more relevant now than when it was proposed: the title Another round another race evokes the funfair, a challenge and a wager, the restarting after every failure, seen like a mirage. The constant necessary illusion that the game, every game underlies, as any ludic attitude.
This comical and – at the same time – sad fairground booth is the effective metaphor of a collective condition: a visionary monument to falling and rising again, a lost dream, which is parked there, waiting perhaps for a new, possible future. To restart the journey, against any expectation, against any rational thought.
To have another round, another race.
Iginio De Luca is a polyhedral Italian artist: musician, visual artist, video maker and performer. In the last few years, his poetics mainly focused on the production of videos, of photographic images, but also of what he defines blitz. Considering them between urban art and performances, the artist performs actions sometimes flying over with aircrafts, sometimes projecting images or inscriptions onto buildings during fast night raids, sometimes ever arriving in places with elements of strong disturbance and visual impact, such as fake electoral billboards. Hybridizing ethics and aesthetics, technology and behavioral actions, De Luca claims the interaction with the environment and the public, denouncing – between irony and engagement – the crisis of values of our times. The use of multiple different linguistic registers has always characterized his projects and – subsequently – his methodological and operational choices, hinting that the common denominator lays in the need to unhinge the certainties, to break up the codes of the expressive formalization, to ambush reality, taking it by surprise from behind. Decoding the plot of the spider net woven by the artist, making up acrobatic balances between signs of different nature, is up to the public, who are called to an active participation by a questioning that cannot be evaded.
Even though he is working on several fields, a unit of concept can be recognized in Iginio de Luca’s poetry, which qualifies as one of the most original artists of the current Italian scenarios.
