At the end of this very special summer in a very special year, in this suspended uncertain time, which is full of surprises and expectations, the 3×6 poster of piazza Bottesini in Barriera di Milano will show – as from 2 September – the fourth poster of the sixth edition of Opera Viva Barriera di Milano, a project devised by Alessandro Bulgini and curated by Christian Caliandro: Triumph of Bacchus and Ariadne by Noura Tafeche.
The work, which was the first one in the group of winners of the 2020 call, will be inaugurated in Piazza Bottesini in Turin and live on Facebook – @flashbackfair – at hrs. 19:00 of Wednesday 2 September; it will do it telling us about the future, a future made of music, civilization, artistic and creative ebullience, happily contaminated and contaminating culture: this is the future we want to live in and that we want to build; such future is already here if we can perceive it and help it grow.
The theme selected this year by Flashback, all art is contemporary is Ludens, inspired to the sci-fi tale Unicorn Variations by Roger Zelazny and to the works of Johan Huizinga. Playing, which is thus meant as a foundation of human life and creativity, as an essential approach for the continuous reconstruction of the world, as a basis for art and culture and as sacred activity, is declined by the artist in a burst of colors, characters, sounds and actions that completely transfigure the visual source derived by the history of art: a detail of Palazzo Farnese decoration, performed by Annibale Carracci (1597-1607), reinterpreting it, making it current and releasing it to our so difficult and interesting contemporaneity.
Noura Tafeche – visual artist and scholar, co-founder of Centro di Cultura Araba, a no-profit organization based in Milan – conceives her work as a “speculative fiction”. As the artist herself states, “the drawing represents an extended imaginary, where the relationships are naturally merged and for an overall vision that may be either bewildering or harmonious depending upon the time and attention that are dedicated to explore, identify and investigate the history of every detail. All the represented miniatures, which contend for the observer’s attention, represent as many portals that let us into dependent and interdependent realities. The Triumph of Bacchus and Ariadne covers an eclectic arch of references: from submersed writing systems to radical fights, from ancient tales to aesthetic notes and visual mentions to contemporary artists, which work as hyperlinks to further explore a story”.
