The Earthly Paradise by Herri met de Bles II is a masterpiece directly connected with Hieronymus Bosch and performed under his direct influence. The small tablet is at the top of Flemish painting of ‘500 for style, quality level, density of symbols and content and importance from the historical-artistic point of view. At the center of a forest populated by fantastic animals and monsters (such as the Unicorn), Adam and Eve fulfill their destiny in the shadow of an extravagant Fountain of Life taken from a triptych by Hieronymus Bosch. Only three variants of the composition are known, including the one on display. Both other versions are preserved in important international museums.
